Why Dental Assistants are Critical to a Successful Dental Practice

One of the reasons a career as a dental assistant is rewarding is that you are essential to the success of your dental practice. It’s a position that is the glue that holds everything together. Your contribution to the synergy and operational efficiency is undeniable—and proven.

The DALE Foundation surveyed dentists, hygienists, office managers, and assistants to pinpoint the value of dental assistants in their practice. Below is a detailed look at their findings.

#1 Operational Efficiency

The work dental assistants perform is integral to the success of the practice. You’ll be a key player who assists everyone from the patients to the hygienist, dentist, and office manager. Working in a dental practice requires the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • 99% agree that dental assistants contribute to the productivity of the practice.
  • 97% agree that dental assistants empower dentists to see more patients per hour/day.
  • 86% agree that dental assistants minimize dentist burnout by lightening their load.

#2 Profitability

Everyone on the team interacts with patients, but you are often the first face patients see. While the overall environment is fast-paced, you’ll need to take the time to engage and ease the anxiety of patients. The more welcome, comfortable, and informed a patient feels—the higher the patient retention rate. Also, the more likely they will stay on top of their dental care.

The DALE Foundation survey also found that:

  • 97% of practices confirmed that dental assistants contribute to patient retention.
  • 91% of practices confirmed that dental assistant’s role increases the likelihood of patients accepting their treatment plan.

#3 Provider and Patient Safety

Each state’s certification requirements are unique. Colorado does not currently require dental assistants to be certified. However, most practices prefer their dental assistants to have formal training. Training at AIDA prepares you to hit the ground running and pass your radiology health and safety (RHS) exam and the infection control (ICE) exam which will allow you to perform the necessary duties your potential employer will require and to make your application more appealing.

In 99% of practices, you will be tasked with infection prevention and control. This entails sterilizing instruments and disinfecting the treatment chair, accessories, and room. This ensures safety for patients and the entire practice.

While infection control was always a top priority, many offices have implemented expanded Covid programs.

#4 Purchasing Power

In many practices, the dental assistant influences ongoing purchasing decisions. You may even be assigned to meet with sales representatives to learn about how new products can benefit your practice.

While the final decision is made by the dentist or multiple team members, 74% of practices order the products their dental assistant suggests. In 72% of practices, the dental assistant conducts some or all of inventory control—including ordering and management.

#5 Multifaceted

While there are best practices and routines, each day presents new challenges. You’ll wear many hats, so you’ll need to adjust your duties to the current patient and practice needs.

In addition to your technical skill set, dentists and dental office managers list the top 5 most important traits as:

  • Good patient care skills
  • A team player
  • Willingness to learn
  • Ability to take ownership
  • Shows initiative

Should You Invest in Formal Dental Assistant Education?

Investing in your education increases your odds of success. Not only will you be a more attractive candidate, but you’ll be better prepared to serve patients and your team.

Your responsibilities in a new practice will likely expand over time. This is why 85% of practices cross-train and 84% empower their assistants to do everything the state allows. Another 89% consider continuing education to be critical. This is because 90% agree that continuing education contributes to the profitability of their practice.
